Vietnam Veterans of America
Mission Statement: Retired veterans who are
Veterans helping Veterans.
Our Chapter motto
“Never again shall one generation of veterans abandon another.”
Chapter #890 in Sandpoint, Idaho is the largest state chapter in Idaho, and is
affiliated with Vietnam Veterans of America, a national veterans organization.
Our membership numbers
64, with 23 lifetime members. Membership is for any Vietnam Veteran who served
in country OR served elsewhere in the world during that Era. Spouses are also
encouraged to join as an associate. Other war or peacetime veterans may join as
an associate. Our local involvement in this community is fundraising for help to
all veterans, not specific to Vietnam. We offer housing assistance, utility
assistance and food assistance. The Chapter also assists veterans with firewood,
for home heating assistance. Chapter #890 holds an annual rummage sale, flag
sales, button sales and donations. We are also participants in the gun and horn
show, Bonner County Fair and donate to the food bank.
Flag sales fund the scholarship program that offers two scholarships to Bonner
County and Boundary County high school graduating seniors.
Assistance for food, lodging, and utilities are funded by FEMA grant funds or
our Chapter general funds.
Members of Chapter #890 also provide transportation or assistance to veterans
who need travel to medical appointments. Now with the DAV van, this van can
transport veterans to and from the VA Medical facility in Spokane free of
charge. The new van has arrived and volunteers are currently needed to drive
from this area to Spokane, taking veterans to the medical facility for treatment
or appointments.
Counseling for Vietnam, Afghanistan and Iraqi veterans and their families is
also provided by Chapter funds even though the veterans administration does not
currently fund these services. Our Chapter saw the need so we fund this service.
In the past, with active members and their skills, we have helped
veterans with small fix up projects such as roof repairs, plumbing repairs,
wheel chair ramps, yard work, painting and spreading gravel on private
driveways.
Our aged veterans, many who are disabled, continue to help anyway they can to
assist other veterans and their family’s. With assistance from the national and
state organization, Vietnam Veterans of America take pride in what we do and
assist those less fortunate in the local communities.
We invite other veterans to our meetings, All Era Vietnam Veterans or veterans
of other conflicts. Our meetings are held once a month on the second Tuesday,
starting at 1800.
We are always looking for donations to help fund our annual garage sale that helps veterans in need and their families. We are currently seeking additional storage facilities to store our goods. If you have or know someone who has storage available, please email us at VVA890@yahoo.com Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks to all who have donated in the past. You are very much appreciated.
